The third release this year on his own new label, 1000Doors, Boardgame James drops his debut, a four track EP of string-led instrumental Grime straight out the golden era of Limewire exchanged mp3s.
Part of Grime’s great radio resurgence in 2015 as one half of Handsome Boys with Moleskin, and following their own debut release ‘And The Award Goes To’ on Valentines just gone, Boardgame James, a longtime secretive solo producer, offers up four tracks from the vault, developed and reworked into a vivid concept EP.
Leaning on the RPG influences of middle 2000s Grime, and sampling the original Final Fantasy VII soundtrack of 1997 on lead track ‘Chosen One’, Boardgame explores a sound somewhere between the early productions of IMP Batch and Danny Weed, and the scoring of Indiana Jones by John Williams.
Soundtracking a daydream in the life of a burnt-out salesman on the brink of self-destruction, the highs and lows of the daily grind, and eventual blissful respite, Boardgame creates a strange alternative London for himself, embellished by his own imagination. ‘Daydream’ is music to point, click, and choose your own adventure to – just don’t forget to save.

Any chance of Side by Side the vocal mix on Bandcamp, please sir? They only place I have that is on Youtubes and it has really bad sound quality. At the moment I'm Side by Siding myself doing all the lyrics myself and my dog is looking at me like I'm daft. I'm a 50 year old man. I should not be acting like this around the house. humblenations
From despair and grief to optimism, the subdued electronic compositions on the latest from Opus form a moving narrative. Bandcamp New & Notable Dec 3, 2023
This debut album from the French-Ghanaian vocalist melds together disparate sounds including rap, noise, ambient, and folk. Bandcamp New & Notable Mar 10, 2023
From the quotes of UK house chord memory progressions of Gold, to Ligth Armour's tribute to Plaid's conception of polyphonic electronic music. My favorite is closing track Hawksworth Woods with its repetitive marimbas and tines nodding to post-rock Tortoise and Steve Reich at times, but then delivers pure Detroit spin at 3'30" with polyphonic majesty entering briefly Olivier Tison
